• Williams K.A. (USA). Culinary Therapy: Evidence for Dietary Treatment of Heart Disease.
• Shlyakhto E.V. (St. Petersburg). Role of the Russian Society of Cardiology in achieving the goals of the Year of Struggle against Cardiovascular Diseases in Russia
Interview with Evgeny V. Shlyakhto, academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Honoured Scientist, president of the Russian Society of Cardiology
How does RSC cooperate with non-governmental healthcare organizations?
The Russian Society of Cardiology actively cooperates with associated non-governmental organizations that unite professionals in the field of preventive treatment, atherosclerosis, hypertension, atherothrombosis, heart failure and many others. We publish guidelines for doctors, organize schools and other educational activities. Our societies perform together in the international arena, particularly in congresses of the European Society of Cardiology. Associated non-govermental organizations are represented on the board of RSC, nominate delegates to the Congress of the Society and candidates for elective office.
Recently the number of RSC members has increased significantly. What is the reason for that?
It is true that over the past four years we have managed to increase the number of members of the Russian Society of Cardiology from 1282 people in 2011 to 6112 people in September 2015. This became possible thanks to earnest commitment of regional offices. Some of them are top performers which increased the number of doctors greatly, for example, Krasnoyarsk department has now more than 300 members, and they started with 25 doctors.
One of the main tasks of RSC is to attract regional organizations for solving common issues, so the Society management has decided to support the activities of regional offices. Congresses and conferences that are now held in regions are showing a high level: they are perfectly prepared events with interesting scientific programme and high-class speakers, attracting a huge number of participants. It can be said that we have fulfilled an important strategic task: regional offices feel that they belong to one and the same Society now.
What is more, the Bureau of RSC has decided to support young cardiologists. I am very pleased that our colleagues have supported me in this matter. The Society allocates travel-grants for young doctors to participate in congresses, both Russian and foreign.
It is important that all members of the Russian Society of Cardiology become members of the European Society of Cardiology. We believe it is necessary to enable members of the RSC to become full participants of the international medical community.

How has international cooperation developed during the past years?
Over the past four years RSC has been successful in promoting Russian medicine and science in the international scientific community. We have strengthened the ties with the European Society of Cardiology (ESC): all registered members of the RSC join ESC as well. For the first time in many years Russian scientists have been included in the programme committee of the European Congress of Cardiology. At the Congress in London RSC together with European colleagues formed and conducted a major symposium on the pathology of aorta and cardiomyopathy.
The Russian Society of Cardiology and ESC annually organize joint meetings on yearly basis in order to coordinate the development of our organizations and identify areas of cooperation.
Our scientists have joined European committees for preparation of European clinical guidelines, and it is a fundamentally important step for Russian medical science.
The International Education Forum "Russian Heart Days" has also become an example of successful cooperation of RSC with European colleagues.

Every year the number of theses submitted to the Congress of the European Society of Cardiology increase, so do the number of oral and poster presentations from Russia.
Now we want to achieve growth in Russian cardiologists publication activity; and the inclusion of our leading scientists into the editorial boards of prestigious European magazines should contribute to it.
CSC actively cooperates with the American College of Cardiology. Not only do we participate in U.S. congresses with the stand of our Society, but also we have been conducting joint symposia for several years. We are working together to prepare the Russian version of clinical guidelines and other educational projects.

A significant strengthening of ties with the Chinese Society of Cardiology became a new direction of our international cooperation in 2015. At the Moscow Congress there are held two joint symposia with Chinese colleagues. Our speakers are warmly welcome at scientific forums held in China. Together with the Chinese Society of Cardiology CSC participates in creating of the Asian Society of Cardiology.
As part of international cooperation development, we want to attract more of the world's leading scientists to participate in international forums held in Russia. We have started work in this direction already: Symposium of the International Society of Atherosclerosis (Anichkov Days) will be held in 2016 in St. Petersburg; it is an important step in the CSC integration into the international medical community.
